Prima linie de tren urban (S-Bahn) in oras a fost infiintata 1851. Ea lega cele cinci gari ale orasului intre ele. Pana in 1877 va fi terminata si centura feroviara a orasului. 1910 primele trasee vor fi electrificate, actiune incheiata 1933.
Metroul. Primul traseu subteran a fost construit 1894, legand doua fabrici ale AEG, insa primul contract din partea orasului il va primi Siemens pentru un traseu pe piloni 1896. Totusi, in urmatorii ani, AEG va primi contracte pentru constructia de trasee subterane in zona centrala a orasului.
Tramvaiul. Primul tramvai tras de cai circula incepand cu 22. iunie 1865. Pe data de 16. mai 1881 in comuna Groß-Lichterfelde (la ora actuala cartier al Berlinului) va circula primul tramvai electric din lume. (Siemens bineinteles!

Autobuzul. Primele au circulat in anul 1905 fiind initial autobuze trase de cai echipate in acel an cu un motor.
Firobuzul. Primul firobuz din lume a circulat tot la Berlin si tot de catre Siemens a fost construit in anul 1882. Din pacate 1973 va fi inchisa ultima linie in Berlinul de est.
...si atunci a intervenit razboiul. Bineinteles ca in timpul luptelor pentru Berlin o mare parte din infrastructura si mai ales garnituri/vehicole au fost distruse. Totusi, pe data de 6 iulie 1945 deja circulau iarasi primele tramvaie. Cu timpul s-a reusit intr-o oarecare masura sa se reabiliteze transportul public in oras. Totul a mers bine pana in data de 12 august 1961. Pana atunci Berlinul a fost un oras deschis. Deci, orice cetatean al RDG putea sa mearga la Berlin, sa se urce in tramvai, metrou etc. si in cateva minute era in occident. Peste un milion de est-germani au folosit aceasta "gaura". Asa ca cei din est au hotarat sa construiasca zidul. In noaptea respectiva au fost intrerupte toate legaturile intre cele doua parti ale orasului. Iar dimineata au inceput sa ridice zidul. Bineinteles ca si transportul public era mort din momentul respectiv. Insa orasul oficial ramanea unul format din patru sectoare ocupate. Deci, existau niste documente care nu puteau fi incalcate. Doua exemple:
Metroul U6/U8 (vest) avea o portiune unde circula dedesubtul Berlinului de est. Avea chiar si o gara acolo - Friedrichstrasse, supranumita "Statia betivilor". Motivul este urmatorul: Statia nu era accesibila cetateanului RDG-ist de rand, insa in acea statie se aflau o serie de chioscuri "Intershop" pe valuta forte, care bineinteles vindeau in primul rand tigari si alcool.
Reteaua "S-Bahn" (de tren urban) a ramas in proprietatea "Deutsche Reichsbahn" (caile ferate ale Reichului) si pe teritoriul Berlinului de vest. Sediul societatii fiind in Berlinul de est, aceasta a devenit ulterior CFR-ul RDG-ist. Este motivul pentru care societatea si-a pastrat numele "imperialist" pana la reunificare.

Interesant este faptul ca in 1869 eram cu 4 ani in urma in ceea ce priveste introducerea tramvaiului in oras, iar acum dupa 140 de ani, putem constata ca ii vom ajunge din urma peste 50 de ani daca ei vor sta pe loc in acest timp, in ceea ce priveste transportul in comun in general...da, no comment...

Nu. La firobuz ambele parti ale orasului au renuntat la inceputul anilor `70. Pacat - dupa 91 de ani - insa nu cunosc motivul. Cu tramvaiul e alta poveste: Deoarece centrul orasului se afla in partea estica, 1961 dintr-o data liniile de tramvai ale Berlinului de vest se terminau in fata zidului. Edilii atunci au preferat sa mizeze pe dezvoltarea retelei de metrou. Pana la reunificare partea vestica nu a avut tramvai. Intre timp exista o singura linie infiintata prin anii `90. Datorita lipsei retelei de tramvai vei vedea acele autobuze supraetajate aproape doar in fostul Berlin occidental. Estul in schimb a dezvoltat reteaua de tramvai si de trenuri urbane, insa n-a prea investit in extinderea metroului.
